Al Maaref Private School Governance: Advisory Board

The Al Maaref Advisory Board comprises all stakeholders including parent, professionals, First education Holding group management and the Head of Schools. It reviews strategic areas including the school’s philosophy and objectives, policies, leadership team, managing key relationships, ensuring quality infrastructure, resources and financial stability. The Advisory Council’s role is to support continuous improvement, guide development and hold the school leadership accountable for the quality of education delivered. These Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic oversight. Their combined talents are focused to support the school’s mission.

Madam Fawzia Mohammed Abdulkarim

Madam Fawzia has over 20+ years in management and leadership. She is known for her dedication, confidence, honesty and keen spirit. Madam Fawzia hold a College Degree in Architecture and Interior Design with varied recognized work experience in engineering, construction, designing and management fields of projects around the UAE. Currently, Madam Fawzia is the Senior Director – Property and Facilities management at Emirates Post Group. In this role,she plays an intrecal part in the development of functional strategic projects along with maintenance of the current facilities all over UAE, covering more than 118 buildings. She has been an innovator responsible for many well-known projects executions throughout the UAE, Al Maha hotel and resorts, business travel international offices , business and first class airport lounges, over 50 buildings for emirates post and more than 30 outlets around UAE just to name a few.

Madam Fawzia has received many accolades for her hard work such as Award of Excellence for Outstanding achievements in buildings 2015 and Award of Excellence for Outstanding employee 2009, Award of Best Design in UAE National Day 42 and 44, and award of innovation in building features 2016. She has also served on various committees such as the Innovation Committee, Seven Star Services Committee, and Project Completion Committee. As important, Madam Fawzia as been an active member of the Al Maaref community and family since the school’s conception and she is a proud parent. She serves as the advisory board’s parent liaison. Dr. Sudha Govindswamy (Sunder)

Dr. Sudha Govindswamy (Sunder)

Dr. Sudha Govindswamy (Sunder), an affiliate consultant for the Council of International Schools (CIS), specializes in Curriculum Design and Delivery. She earned her doctorate in education from the University of Bath, in the United Kingdom. As a certified concept-based curriculum consultant from Dr. Lynn Erickson Institute, Whitefish, Montana, Dr. Sunder works in supporting schools unpack both the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), focusing on the conceptual shift classroom teachers need to understand, while implementing the standards with intellectual rigor and integrity. Commissioned by the International Baccalaureate (IB) and in collaboration with Achieve, Dr. Sunder has co-authored the Relationship Study Report between the NGSS and the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. She also serves, as a curriculum reviewer for the IB (PYP), is an Apple Distinguished Educator, and a SMART Exemplary Educator. Dr. Sunder has been engaged in NGSS and CCSS workshops with the KDSL team in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. In addition, she has worked in seven other countries.

Prof. Sufian A. Forawi

Prof. Sufian A. Forawi is currently a Professor of Science Education in the Faculty of Education at the British University in Dubai. Prof. Sufian obtained an Ed.D. in Science Education from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. He obtained a bachelor degree in Biology from the University of Alexandria, Egypt and a master’s degree in Education from Omdurman Islamic University, Sudan, and His area of expertise is in the Nature of Science, Teacher Education and Science Technology. He was awarded the distinguished US Fulbright Scholar exchange at the UAE University in 2007-2008. Prof. Sufian has over 15 years of science teaching and coordination experience in higher education. He has been a member of several science education organizations such as the National Association of Research on Science Teaching (NARST) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA) & the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA). He is the editor of the International Journal of Excellence in eLearning and had worked as Chair and Editor of the Science Education Section of the Missouri Academy of Science. He has published widely in peer reviewed journals and participated in book publication (Opening and Operating Charter Schools: The Kansas City Experience. Eds. Central Missouri State University Printing Service; Science Teacher Professional Development: The United Arab Emirates’ Challenges and Needs, Sense Publisher). He has a strong external grant record, e.g. NSF and Ohio State Department of Education, in the USA and Emirates Foundation in the UAE.

Rajesh E. V. Sundaresan

Rajesh E V Sundaresan has 24+ years in entrepreneurship and international business experience. He is the CFO and Board Secretary of First Education Holdings B.S.C. Bahrain, an investment group that manages nurseries and other educational institutions. Rajesh is a certified Chartered Accountant and Auditor. He is well experienced in the management and oversight of entire Finance / Audit functions including Budgeting and Financial reporting as per IFRS. Rajesh obtained his bachelors degree in Commerce and hold a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Chifley Business School, LA Trobe University in Melbourne Australia. He earned his Chartered Accountant Degree (ACA) from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and his Internal Auditor Certification from the Institute of Internal Auditors USA. He is currently working as CFO and Board Secretary of First Education Holdings B.S.C. Bahrain.

Nadine Richards is a USA certified district-level administrator, instructional leader, and life-long learner who is passionate about enhancing student growth. Her contagious smile personifies her philosophy of learning: that happy children are successful. Nadine’s employs a holistic approach to teaching, learning and understanding. Her practices promote developing the whole child and revolutionize schools for positive growth. Currently, Nadine serves as the Head of Schools (Principal) of Al Maaref Private School LLC, in Dubai UAE. She is an experienced leader specializing in American curriculum, teacher training, strategic planning and best practices. Her passion, to nurture young global citizens in deep and active learning, led to her recent participation in Harvard Graduate School of Education Project Zero: Global and Digital Learning Program. Additionally, she is pursuing her doctorate in Education Leadership and Policy at Hofstra University. There, her focus areas of study have been Intercultural Leadership, Curriculum Development and Education Policy. Implementing a movement that builds upon a vision and culture of reflective improvements is the surge of energy she is known to bring to the learning community.
